I made this collage the day before the earthquake/tsunami disaster in Japan. The magazine clipping that fills the lower right portion of the composition happens to show the aftermath of an earthquake in Japan from many years ago. The whole thing was a bit of an eerie coincidence. I liked this image a lot and initially considered using it as reference material for a painting. When I heard about what happened in Japan, I was a bit nervous about this plan. I was hesitant to make a "current events painting" mostly because I was more interested in the collage for its mythological implications. The news event brought too much reality into what started out as a somewhat fantastical image. After much deliberation I decided to make the painting anyway. |
